Johnston learned photography while apprenticing with Thomas W. Smillie, Official Photographer at the Smithsonian Institution. She became a professional photographer in the 1890s. Johnston maintained a close relationship with the Smithsonian throughout her career--corresponding with Smillie, inquiring about gaps in the colleciton, and acquiring images for the Section of Photography, especially during her European trips.
