In
the aftermath of September 11, 2001, the idea
of displaying the American flag on magazine covers as
a public showing of patriotism and unity emerged once
again. One New York City publishing house organized
quickly in response to the terrorist attacks and encouraged
its magazines to run a flag campaign reminiscent of
that of July 1942.
Seventeen magazines published
by Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., including Elle,
Premiere, Popular Photography, and Womans
Day, featured an image of the flag along with the
words United We Stand on their November or December
covers (depending on production schedules). These issues
also carried editorial messages reflecting on the September
11 attacks. Woman's Day participated in both
the 1942 and 2001 flag-cover campaigns.
