Fern Bisel Peat (1893–1971) designed the July 1942 cover of Children’s Playmate, and also served as the magazine’s art director. Peat and other women illustrators prepared the drawings and paper dolls that appeared inside the issue. Elaine Ends’s line drawing promoted war-bond sales. Angela Tuite’s version of the iconic The Spirit of ’76, based on Archibald Willard’s 1876 painting, may have been a reference point for Peat’s cover design.
