Fern
Bisel Peat (18931971) designed the July 1942
cover of Childrens Playmate, and also served
as the magazines art director. Peat and other women
illustrators prepared the drawings and paper dolls that appeared
inside the issue. Elaine Endss line drawing promoted
war-bond sales. Angela Tuites version of the iconic
The Spirit of 76, based on Archibald Willards
1876 painting, may have been a reference point for Peats
cover design.
