Magazine stand, Yreka,
California,
July 1942
On July 4, 1942, American newsstands like this one in
Yreka, California, displayed a spectacular sight
dozens of magazines covered with images of the U.S.
flag. Many also carried the slogan United We Stand
a patriotic rallying cry dating back to the American
Revolution and urged readers to buy war bonds.
The magazines shown in the photograph are Womans
Home Companion, McCalls, True Love and
Romance, Good Housekeeping, Screenland,
and True Romances.
