Many magazines that displayed the flag in July 1942 also carried another message: “Buy War Bonds and Stamps.” This was at the request of Treasury secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr. (1891–1967), who hoped the flag covers would inspire Americans to support the war with their dollars as well as their hearts.
