We can ... We will ... We must!
U.S. Treasury Department poster, 1942
NMAH Political History Collection
Gift of Outdoor Advertising, Inc.
One of the
most popular poster designs of World War II, this image of
the American flag was used by the U.S. Treasury Department throughout
the war to promote the sale of savings bonds. Designed by Carl Paulson
in 1941 under the direction of the Outdoor Advertising Association
of America, Inc., it appeared on thousands of billboards nationwide
in the spring of 1942. Its eye-catching design and straightforward
message from Franklin D. Roosevelt we can, we will, we must!
linked the flag to wartime ideals of patriotism, service,
and sacrifice.
