Beginning
with Pearl Harbor, the Japanese launched a series of
successful air attacks against U.S. forces in the Pacific.
By mid-1942, however, the tide had started to turn. American
air power gained strength and claimed a decisive victory at
the Battle of Midway in June. Meanwhile, on July 4, the U.S.
Army Air Forces flew their first combat missions in Europe
with Britains Royal Air Force, bombing German air bases
in Holland.
