United
We Stand?
Some Americans questioned if the slogan United We Stand legitimately
represented the nation. The internment of Japanese Americans,
race riots, segregation, and restricted facilities challenged
the assumption of unity.
The National Urban League, an organization
promoting economic development for black Americans, was not
a member of the National Publishers Association, but its magazine
Opportunity did feature a flag cover. James L. Allen
photographed the color guard of the U.S. Armys 372d
Infantry for the July 1942 issue.
