Americans
understood the threat that World War II posed to their
way of life. During a time of great uncertainty, many found
the familiar symbols of home and family reassuring. The July
1942 cover campaign reinforced popular, idealized perceptions
and minimized the wartime pressures of separation, anxiety,
and financial hardships. Cover images of families raising
the flag and celebrating holidays emphasized the passing on
of cultural traditions and the importance of sharing patriotic
values with the next generation.
