A number
of magazines, especially those sold on newsstands rather
than only by subscription, prided themselves on designing
artistic covers to capture public attention. Art directors,
artists, and photographers collaborated to create visual excitement,
and a special project like the flag campaign brought out their
best efforts. The covers represent the artistic vitality of
the period and the creativity inspired by the message.
The most successful results came
from artists who conceptualized the cover as a whole design
rather than using the flag merely as an illustrative element
or an added symbol.
