    These folders contain songs with a military theme dating after the Civil War and before World War I. Some material dates from the time of the Spanish American War, however, songs that specifically mention the war are in folders J-L. Many of the songs use the theme of courtship and separation of the couple as the man enters the armed forces. Some of the songs are about death on the battlefield or serve as a memorial to war dead. The largest number of sheets date from the 1900s. (ca. 155 items)

    Most of the items are marches; some of the marches are quicksteps. Additional military marches of this period can be found in the John Phillip Sousa file. (33 items)

Box 40

    I, Spanish American War, 1897-1911:

    Songs about the war of 1898 between Spain and the United States are in folders I-K. The 1911 imprint from folder I is about veterans of the war. Other topics include the Cuban revolution of 1895-1898 and the Philippines. For more sheet music on the Spanish American War see the file on composer Theodore Morse. (14 items)

    J, The Maine, Spanish American War, 1896-1898:

    Included here are songs about the sinking of the battleship Maine in 1898. The only item not from 1898 is an imprint of 1896 written in support of the Cuban revolution. On the back cover of the sheet is a photograph of the Maine. (21 items)  Click here to view image

    K, George Dewey, Spanish American War, 1898-1917:

    Most sheets date from 1898, the year of Dewey's victory over the Spanish in the naval battle of Manila Bay (Philippines). (22 items)

    L, Japan, Pre-World War I, 1894-1905:

    All but two of the sheets date from the Japanese-Russian War of 1904-1905. Both instrumental and vocal music is included. Two of the sheets are newspaper supplements from the Chicago Sunday American. (12 items)

    M, Mexico--Frontier Problems, 1908-1916:

    Most items deal with the 1916 U.S. Army expedition into Mexico. (8 items)
