History

The Robinson family acquired land and began raising tobacco in Prince George's County, MD in 1843. The property consisted of over 170 acres by the end of the 19th century and included a dwelling, tenant house and various outbuildings. At lease two more tenant houses were constructed by Frank A. Robinson in the early 20th century. While the principal crop remained tobacco, other grain crops were grown and a flock of sheep was raised. By the 1950s-1960s the Robinson family was farming over 1,000 acres in Prince George's and Charles Counties, MD, through a combination of lease and direct ownership.

The Via family acquired land and began raising tobacco and livestock in Prince George's County, MD, by 1949. The property consisted of thirty acres of owned property and included a dwelling and small outbuildings. The Via family was also employed off the farm. By 1956 the Via family had moved to Calvert County, MD and was engaged in farming full-time on approximately 150 acres of owned property, raising tobacco, small grains and livestock.

The Robinson family continues farming on approximately 275 acres of owned property in Benedict, Charles County, MD. By 1993, the Via farm had been reduced to approximately five acres of owned property which is no longer farmed. (See more detailed history at Appendix III)

Scope and Content

An extensive and comprehensive collection of papers relating to family and farming, the Robinson-Via Family Papers covers many aspects of family farm life. The papers are particularly important in regard to the tobacco culture, an important facet of the culture of the United States from colonial times to the present.

The papers consist of material generated by the Robinson and Via families of Southern Maryland in their personal lives and as farmers. The papers concern two distinct family groups, the Robinson family and the Via family which are connected through the marriage of Franklin A. Robinson and Adina Mae Via. The papers are especially strong in 20th century material. The papers consist of various types of farm records; account books, bills, receipts, tenant farming agreements, ephemera, land rental and purchase agreements, insurance policies, photographs and 8mm films of farming practices and procedures, equipment and landscapes, etc.-- all related to the farming of tobacco, small grains, and livestock. The personal records include diaries, letters (personal and business), greeting cards, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, high school yearbooks, baby books, house plans, recipe books, photographs and 8mm films (of birthdays, holidays, weddings, baptisms, family occasions, and family travel, etc.). Of particular interest are the Serenity Farm tobacco production photographs documenting the crop year 1999-2000.

The Robinson Family Papers deal with the continuous farming operation of a single family, one which employed not only immediate family members but also sharecroppers, tenant farmers and hired hands. The farming operation itself was carried out on acreage amounting to over five-hundred acres, a large farm for Southern Maryland. Account books from the latter part of the 19th century extending into the 20th century give an accurate and detailed picture of the day-to-day workings of a tobacco farm. Personal letters, diaries and ephemera complement the technical aspects of farming with its human aspects. Through these documents one gathers a sense of the place of the Robinson family in the community, their day-to-day concerns and inter-family relationships. The diaries of Elizabeth Bourne Robinson, 1951-1960, are particularly vivid for detail of the daily operations of farming and family life.

The Via papers deal with a family which left farming in the late 1920's but returned to farming full-time in the 1950's. They are a particularly appropriate complement to the Robinson Family Papers because they deal with a farming operation of a smaller size from approximately thirty acres to one-hundred and fifty acres. In contrast to the Robinson operation, this farming operation was carried on by one man, Robert M. Via, with occasional hired help as opposed to the Robinson operation which had a far greater complement of outside labor. An additional contrast is that, in the Via family, one has a picture of a family where both spouses worked outside of the home and farm. This is a precursor to the predominate farming operation of Southern Maryland today, where the primary income source is derived from employment off the farm, with the farming operation providing a smaller source of income. The Via papers also deal with a family situation much different than the Robinson family. Transplanted from various parts of Maryland and Virginia, the Via's did not have the familial history in the region that the Robinson's did and thus the Via family operated from a much different social perspective than the Robinson family. While both families can probably be termed upper middle class, educated, property owners, their responsibilities and activities in society were dictated by their relative positions in the community.

The Via family papers are especially strong in regard to farming and social history in the latter half of the 20th century. The papers of Robert M. Via are strong in material concerning his employment in public transportation in Washington, DC, from 1928-1956. The papers of Adina Via Robinson are particularly complete in documenting the life of a woman coming of age in the 1950s, prior to the social changes of the latter 20th century. The papers of Adina Via Robinson and Franklin A. Robinson include personal correspondence dealing with personal matters, as well as life on the farm and in the surrounding community, and school life in the 1950s. Included is correspondence between them during Franklin's service in the United States Army, 1955-1956 at Camp Gordon, GA and Camp Handford, WA. The papers also include a comprehensive range of 8mm films and photographs documenting farming practices and landscapes as well as family gatherings, birthdays, holidays, and vacations.
