Smart card, 1990s. Smart cards were experimentally introduced into the United States by a number of banks in various ways. First Union created an affinity program for the Jacksonville Jaguars centered on a series of smart cards issued in several denominations for use during the inaugural season of the Jaguars at their home stadium. They have not been very popular in the U.S., mainly due to the easy availability of credit and credit cards.
