This automobile was donated to the Smithsonian in 1929 by the parents of its owner. At the time of the donation, A. J. Wetmore, then assistant secretary of the Smithsonian, wrote to the donor and told them, “The machine which is especially notable for its mechanical perfection, has been placed on display in our series illustrating the development of the automobile....” The Simplex was a racing car. The museum's automobile was number 778 in the series of cars manufactured by Simplex Automobile Company of New York City. |

This automobile consists of a Simplex “50” stock chassis with skeleton body by Holbrook. It has a red body, a chain drive, a four-cylinder engine, cast two in a block, T-head, and a two-spark ignition.
