Many people in the 1950s believed that improved transportation--primarily adapting the city to the automobile--was the key to mitigating the effects of changing social realities on the nation's cities. Unfortunately, as historian Donald L. Miller points out, "the city's urban transportation corridors became escapeways from the city, not the linkages they had been."
